Monthly Living Expenses in Sweden (Stockholm Area)

For a family of 2 adults + 1 infant. All amounts in SEK. Based on Konsumentverket, Swedbank, and real 2026 data.

Important: These figures are monthly expenses (after-tax spending) — the amount you need in your pocket after taxes. To earn this much take-home, you need a higher gross (before-tax) salary. For example, to take home 33,000 SEK/month, you need roughly 42,000 SEK/month gross salary (~21% effective tax rate). See the Tax Structure and Survival Summary tabs for gross salary breakdowns.

How to read: If India has a PPP index of 24, it means 37,000 SEK in Sweden has the same purchasing power as 37,000 x (24/100) = 8,880 SEK worth of goods in India - but those 8,880 SEK buy the same quality of life. In other words, you need ~75% less money in India for the same standard of living.

2nd Pillar Tjanstepension (Occupational) ~4.5-30% depending on employer Employer pays into pension fund via collective agreement (ITP/SAF-LO). Huge part of total pension. Sometimes fund selection
3rd Pillar Privat pension (Private) Voluntary ISK account, regular savings, stocks, funds. No longer tax-deductible since 2016. Full control
Important: Sweden's pension replaces only ~50-60% of your final salary. The tjanstepension from your employer is crucial. Always check that your employer has a collective agreement (kollektivavtal) — it guarantees pension contributions, insurance, and better terms.

Money-Saving Tips

Use Store Apps

ICA, Coop, and Willys apps have personalized discounts. ICA's bonus system gives 1% back on purchases.

Shop Late Evening

Many stores mark down items 30-50% after 18:00. Bread, meat, and dairy near expiry are heavily discounted.

Asian & Middle Eastern Stores

Rice, spices, vegetables, and tofu are 30-60% cheaper at ethnic grocery stores compared to ICA/Coop.

Buy Frozen

Frozen vegetables and berries are much cheaper than fresh, often equally nutritious, and reduce waste.

Karma & Too Good To Go

Apps that sell surplus food from restaurants and stores for 50-70% off. Great for trying new places cheaply.

Meal Plan Weekly

Plan meals before shopping. Average Swedish family wastes ~8,000 SEK/year on thrown-away food.

Important: Revolut and Klarna cannot issue Swedish BankID. You will need an account at a traditional Swedish bank (Swedbank, SEB, Nordea, Handelsbanken, or Länsförsäkringar) to get BankID. Many newcomers use Revolut for day-to-day spending while using their Swedish bank account purely for BankID and Swish.

Cashless society: Sweden is one of the world's most cashless countries. Many restaurants, small shops, and even some churches and markets only accept card or Swish. Always carry a card. ATMs (Bankomat) exist but are becoming scarcer — do not rely on cash. By law, Swedish banks must maintain some cash services, but in practice you may rarely need it.

ISK — Investment Savings Account (Investeringssparkonto)

The ISK is Sweden's main tax-advantaged investment account. Instead of paying capital gains tax on each trade, you pay a flat annual "standard rate" tax on the total portfolio value. Hugely popular for long-term investing in index funds.

FeatureDetail
Tax methodFlat annual "schablonintäkt" — no tax on individual gains/dividends. Tax on ~1.09% of portfolio value (2026 rate)
Effective tax rate examplePortfolio of 100,000 SEK → taxed on 1,090 SEK income → ~30% tax on that = ~327 SEK/year in tax
Benefits vs regular accountNo capital gains tax (30%) on profits; no dividend tax; simple annual tax calculation; no need to report individual trades
When ISK is betterAlmost always better than a regular "kapitalförsäkring" account for active investors; better than direct holding when markets rise strongly
WithdrawalFully flexible — withdraw cash or shares anytime; no lock-in period
Who can open oneSwedish tax residents; available at all major banks and brokers (Avanza, Nordnet are most popular)
What you can holdStocks, ETFs, funds, bonds listed on approved exchanges

Work Culture

AspectWhat to Expect
FikaMandatory coffee/tea breaks (usually 10:00 and 14:30) — a cultural institution, not optional. Used for socialising and team bonding.
Flat hierarchySwedish workplaces are famously non-hierarchical. Managers are approachable, first names used universally, and everyone's opinion is valued regardless of title.
Lagom & consensusDecisions are typically consensus-driven. The Swedish concept of lagom (just the right amount) means avoiding extremes — don't dominate meetings, hear everyone out.
PunctualityBeing on time is expected and respected. Arriving late to a meeting is considered disrespectful. Meetings start and end on time.
Work-life balanceStrongly prioritised. Working excessive overtime is frowned upon. Leaving on time is normal and respected. Managers rarely email after hours.
Typical hours08:00–17:00 is standard. Many companies offer flexible start/end times (e.g., 07:00–16:00 or 09:00–18:00).
Remote / hybrid workVery common, especially post-pandemic. Most office jobs offer 2–3 remote days per week. Full-remote roles exist in tech.
Communication styleDirect but polite. Swedes say what they mean without being rude. Small talk is minimal; getting to the point quickly is appreciated.

Employment Rights (Anställningsrättigheter)

Right / BenefitDetail

Sick leave (Sjukskrivning) Day 1: Karensdag — unpaid (one qualifying deduction day per illness).
Days 2–14: Employer pays 80% of salary.
Day 15+: Försäkringskassan pays sjukpenning (80% of salary, capped at ~1,116 SEK/day in 2026).
Parental leave (Föräldraledighet) 480 days per child, shared between parents. 90 days are reserved per parent (use it or lose it). Pays ~80% of salary (capped) via Försäkringskassan. Can be used until the child turns 12.
VAB (Vård av barn) Stay home to care for a sick child — paid by Försäkringskassan at 80% of salary (same karensdag rule applies). No limit on number of days if child is under 12.
Overtime (Övertid) Regulated by law and collective agreements. General overtime: max 48 hours/4 weeks or 200 hours/year. Must be compensated with extra pay or time off in lieu (flex). Employer cannot demand unlimited overtime.
Pension Employer contributes 4.5% of salary to occupational pension (tjänstepension) up to 7.5 income base amounts, then 30% above that. State pension contributions also deducted from payroll taxes.

American School of Stockholm (ASS) Stockholm (Danderyd) ~150,000–200,000 SEK/year American curriculum, AP courses, IB Diploma
